AI Will Open Up A New Computer-Human Interface


How we interact with computers has changed over time. We went from punchcards to command line interfaces to graphical user interfaces. Each iteration has expanded the accessibility of computers to a broader audience.

The first commercial computer, UNIVAC I, was purchased to help with the US Census data in the 1950s. It weighed over 7 tons and needed an army of people to operate using punchcards. By the 80s, kids at home played Oregon Trail on IBM PC at home via command line interfaces on MS-DOS. Now, people interact with computers in their pockets graphically with their fingers as they walk.

A New Interface? Isn''t AI/LLM Just A Better Chatbot?


The latest advancement in AI, known as LLM (large language model), unlocks two key superpowers: programming via natural language and learning from user preference for more personalized experiences (Yingqiang Ge, et al, 2023). These two key superpowers will enable more people to program computers using everyday language and tailor their interactions to suit their preferences. These breakthroughs will empower users to shape computer behavior according to their unique desires, making technology more accessible and personalized for all.

What Does 'œPersonalized Experience' Mean To Me In Plain English?


Personalized experience means tailoring things to suit my unique preferences and interests. I love traveling. I am all about discovering unique and a little obscure experiences over taking Instagram-perfect pictures. I follow Mitra (@travelbymitra) because she's a wealth of knowledge when it comes to off-the-beaten-path destinations like Galleria Sciarra, tucked away near the Trevi Fountain.

Let''s imagine Mitra has her own AI travel agent packed with all that insider info. With AI, she could create a personalized itinerary just for me. I'd simply tell my own AI agent to team up with hers, and voila'”a customized travel plan tailored to my tastes. Plus, thanks to AI's adaptability, we could tweak the itinerary on the fly, adjusting for things like traffic or those last-minute restaurant finds on day two of the trip. It's like having a travel buddy who knows exactly what I like, helping me make the most of every adventure.

Unleashing The Uniqueness Of People


In the previous evolution of human-computer interfaces, we standardized and trained people to interact with computers in specific ways: cntr+alt+del to restart, click this button to send an email, pinch-and-zoom to enlarge a picture, etc. These actions became routine because software developers determined them to offer the best user experience, and users were trained to follow suit. Essentially, we fit users into predetermined steps in order to interact with the computers.

Exciting new possibilities emerge with the latest AI advancements. Individuals now have novel avenues to train computers to behave according to their preferences, embracing the unique characteristics of each person. This shift opens the door to a future where technology enriches the lives of individuals in meaningful ways, and I'm eager to see what lies ahead.

I’ve heard many of my Gen Z members and followers talk about how difficult it is to apply for jobs when every company seems to require two or more years of experience for entry-level positions, the types of jobs Gen Z, the youngest demographic in the workforce, shouldn’t have any problems getting.

The idea that you can’t apply for a job that requires “years of experience” because you’re a new grad is a myth, and I’m going to tell you exactly what to do instead.

First, I want you to understand the reason they say a job requires “two years of experience” is that they want to make sure you’ve worked at some point in your life. Hopefully, you’ve had an internship, maybe in college or while you were in grad school, but you do have some sort of work experience.

The second thing you need to know is that you have a secret weapon, and it’s called your connection story. What you lack in experience you can make up for with enthusiasm and by sharing how you feel motivated to work for a company.

So, how do you write a connection story?

Step 1: Ask yourself, “Why do I respect and admire this company?” and “What taught me that they were worthy of this respect and admiration?”

Step 2: Think about your own life. What’s making you feel connected to them as an employer?

Step 3: Put your connection story together in a disruptive cover letter. Unlike a traditional cover letter, a disruptive cover letter is a storytelling cover letter.

Step 4: Once you’ve written your disruptive cover letter, reach out to the recruiter, hiring manager, and/or people who work at the company and say…

“Hey, enclosed is the story of why I feel so connected to your company. I’d love to learn what it might take to earn the opportunity to interview or be considered for the XYZ position.”

When you say there’s a story, that piques their interest. And when you say you want to earn the opportunity, you don’t have to point out that you don’t have the exact experience. What you’re trying to do is to get them to see that you have the intrinsic motivation to do the job.

They can teach you the experience. What they need is somebody who understands why they want to work there. That’s what they’re looking for, and that’s what you need to share with them.

I see this every single day. In fact, I’ll tell you a story.

I worked with a young man named Seth. He was a senior in college. He wanted to get a job in recruiting. It required five years of experience. But with this technique, he shared his connection story with the recruiters that were recruiting for the position. And he got the job. He beat out people who had 10 years of experience. And the reason he won the job is because of that connection story. They clearly understood that he wanted to be a recruiter and he was able to say, “Look, I have no bad habits. You can mold me, you can train me, and I’m passionate about this.”

You can do the same thing. But it starts with understanding what your connection story is and then sharing it with those employers.

Time Management: 4 Keys To Avoiding Work-Related Stress

Workplace stress is considered normal. However, excessive stress may negatively affect your productivity and personal health. The way you deal with stress at work can make a difference. Many people assume that they don’t have any control over their work environment. Yes, you can’t control everything at your workplace, but it doesn’t mean you’re powerless.

Stress management isn’t a big deal if you keep your focus clear and think about the aspects that ARE in your control. If you are over-occupied with work, then it might make your attitude stubborn or irritable. You can lose your confidence and your work will seem less rewarding. If you don’t manage workplace stress at its initial stage, then it will ultimately result in bigger problems.

Here are some simple time management tips to regain your control over difficult situations and handle work-related stress effectively:

Balance Your Work-Life Schedule

Analyze your daily schedule and responsibilities at home and work. Make a to-do list and estimate the time needed to complete tasks. Create a smooth balance between work and family life. Analyze your eating and sleeping habits (many people don’t get enough sleep). Eat a balanced diet and try to get 6-8 hours of sleep.

Don’t Over-Commit

It’s not humanly possible to work well consecutively for 8-9 hours. Some people think that if they work uninterrupted for eight hours, then they can get more work done. This concept is not true. Instead, it will decrease your energy and productivity levels and lift your work-related stress level.

Avoid putting too much on your plate and scheduling tasks back-to-back. Don’t over-occupy yourself and take on too many tasks for a single day. If you have heaps of tasks, then make a distinction between “should” and “must.” Drop down tasks that are not on priority right now or remove them entirely from your list. Time management is essential to any workday.

Get To Work Earlier

Try to get to work early. Even 10-15 minutes can bring a huge difference between rushing toward your seat and peacefully starting your day. Don’t add one more stressor to your list by arriving late to the office.

Organize Your Breaks

Take a few five-minute breaks throughout your day to keep your mind fresh. Go for a walk, stretch at your desk, conduct a breathing exercise, or engage in small chit-chat with your colleagues to keep yourself active. Sitting in one place the whole day can make you dull and lethargic.

Go out or get away from your cubicle for lunch. Stepping away from your tasks and taking small breaks will help you relax and recharge so you can conquer new challenges.

Pressure at work is sometimes motivating but an excessive amount of it results in stress. By effectively managing your time, you can organize your tasks, meet your deadlines, and beat work-related stress.

The Biggest Mistake Job Seekers Make In Final Round Interviews (That Costs Them The Job!)

The interview process can take weeks to get through, and when you finally get to the final interview, you want to do everything in your power to ace it so you’re the one they choose for the job. However, most job seekers don’t know they’re making a huge mistake in final interviews that could cost them the job offer.

In your first round of interviews, you’re usually talking with a recruiter. You’re doing a phone screen and they’re just trying to figure out if you have the skills to move forward. Then you start to go through an interview, maybe two, where you’re meeting with hiring managers and other people who would be your peers, and that’s when they’re whittling down a half-dozen candidates to the final two or three.

Then, it’s the final interview. From coaching my clients, I’ve discovered that those who make it to the final interview and don’t get the job are pulling back in that last interview.

#1 Mistake: Pulling Back (And What To Do Instead)

In the final interview, you know it’s crunch time. And these clients of mine are emotionally aware and want to convey humility in the interview process. They don’t want to brag. They don’t want to be a narcissist. They don’t want to be cocky. They don’t want to oversell themselves and look desperate. So in an effort not to overdo it in that final interview, they sort of pull back. They don’t want to oversell themselves or say something that isn’t true.

The problem is, in the first interviews, they had more confidence. They conveyed more confidence. So all of a sudden in the final interview, when you’re trying to be more technically accurate with what you say, you actually start to look like you’re backing off, that you’re not as secure about yourself.

While I don’t want you to go in and be that cocky, over-the-top person, you do have to make sure that you deliver consistency with what you’ve been conveying throughout the entire interview process.

Now, how do you do that?

As a career coach, I teach my clients how to answer questions with a beginning, a middle, and an end. I also call it the “Experience + Learn = Grow” model. This is the best way to avoid pulling back in final interviews. It’s also better (and far easier) than the STAR method, which people overuse and recruiters can spot a mile away because it feels canned.

With the “Experience + Learn = Grow” model, your answers sound authentic and you provide enough detail without overdoing it. That shows hiring managers you know what you’re talking about and you will feel comfortable because you are telling them the truth.

This model works, and it’s the final round interview where you want to nail things like your behavioral questions, those open-ended questions where you need this beginning, middle, and end storytelling format so that you give the right amount of detail, and you get the job.

For all of you out there who have ever made it to the final round and thought, “I don’t want to overkill it,” and then you didn’t get the job, it’s probably because you pulled back too much and looked like you weren’t as sure of yourself. You fix it with “Experience + Learn = Grow.” That’s the way to do it.
