If you want to get a job in 2024, you need to be ready to share three stories with every hiring manager and recruiter you meet. These three stories will help recruiters and hiring managers fall in love with you, and this is also how you make a stronger first impression.

Storytelling in general is important, but it can be particularly powerful in the hiring process. When you go into an interview, you need to be able to tell concise stories so that they can validate your knowledge and expertise.

These three stories help them learn more about the complete you...

1. Why You Want To Work For This Company


This story needs to be based on your connection to the employer. They don't want to hear that you love their benefits package or that you heard they pay well. They want to hear why you love their product or service and why you're a huge fan of the customers they serve.

Somehow you need to tell a connection story that gets them to understand your intrinsic motivation, which is just a fancy term for what will get you out of bed every day and want to work for this company. What do you believe in? They can't teach you intrinsic motivation. There are so many candidates out there who look the same that you need to have this really great connection story because that's what gets them to choose you.

2. Why You Love To Create The Value That You Do

Now, the second story you need to have on the ready is why you nerd out on the work that you do and why you love to create the value that you do on the job. Your unique value add (UVA) is how you save a company money, make a company money, solve problems, and alleviate pain. They don't pay you just for the heck of it. You need to create value.

When you can talk about why you love doing the work that you do and how you nerd out on it, you're showing them once again what's going to get you out of bed every day. You're self-motivated to create that value, exceed expectations, be resourceful, and think outside the box. Again, they have all these candidates to choose from. They want the employee who is going to be like that. So, this second story is very powerful.

3. The Most Exciting Or Positive Thing That Happened In Your Career In The Last Year

The third story is the one I love the most right now, which is what's the most exciting or positive thing that happened in your career in the last year? You want to share this story with recruiters and hiring managers because they need to know that you are constantly looking at your career and assessing what's happened to you so that you can learn and grow from it.

When you can recognize that the things that happened to you were very powerful and positive, they know that you're a powerful and positive person who is always striving to learn and grow. And it's also just a great feel-good story that can articulate a lot about you.

So, let's recap.

The three stories you need to share are...

  1. Why you want to work for the company (sharing your connection to the company).
  2. Why you nerd out on the work that you do (showing your resourcefulness).
  3. The greatest thing that happened to you in your career in the last year (showing your positivity and power).

You could type these up right now and have them ready for an interview. Or you could even go so far as to put them in a cover letter. But the one that will go much farther is video.

There is a way for you to record these three stories and rerecord them until their perfect. Then, you can take these three stories, put them in what's called a reel, and send them off as a URL to recruiters and hiring managers. That's when they'll fall in love with you. That's when they will see that you are the kind of person that is more than just the experience. You are the full package, and it will elevate your first impression because video is the new first interview. Video is the new phone screen. Interview questions are not as straightforward as they seem, and answering just one question incorrectly may put you out of the running for a job.

The takeaway? Be ready to read between the lines.

Here are seven of the most common interview questions, what the hiring manager is really asking, and how you should respond:

1. "Tell Me About Yourself."

"How does your education, work history, and professional aspirations relate to this position?"

How to respond: Select key work and education information that shows the hiring manager why you are a perfect fit for the job and for the company.

For example, a recent grad might say something like, "I went to X University where I majored in Y and completed an internship at Z Company. During my internship, I did this and that (name achievements that match the job description), which really solidified my passion for this line of work."

2. "Where Do You See Yourself In 5 Years?"

"Does this position fit into your long-term career goals? Do you even have long-term career goals?"

How to respond: Do NOT say you don't know (even if you don't) and do not focus on your personal life (it's nice that you want to get married, but it's not relevant). Show the employer you've thought about your career path and that your professional goals align with the job.

3. "What's Your Greatest Weakness?"

"Are you self-aware? Do you know where you could stand to improve and are you proactive about getting better?"

How to respond: A good way to answer this is with real-life feedback that you received in the past. For instance, maybe a former boss told you that you needed to work on your presentation skills.

Note that fact, then tell the employer how you've been proactively improving. Avoid any deal breakers ("I don't like working with other people.") or cliché answers ("I'm a perfectionist and I work too hard.").

4. "What Motivates You To Perform?"

"Are you a hard worker? Am I going to have to force you to produce quality work?"

How to respond: Ideal employees are intrinsically motivated, so tell the hiring manager that you find motivation when working toward a goal, contributing to a team effort, and/or developing your skills. Provide a specific example that supports your response.

Finally, even if it's true, do not tell an employer that you're motivated by bragging rights, material things, or the fear of being disciplined.

5. "Tell Me About A Time That You Failed."

"How do you respond to failure? Do you learn from your mistakes? Are you resilient?"

How to respond: Similar to the "greatest weakness" question, you need to demonstrate how you've turned a negative experience into a learning experience.

To do this, acknowledge one of your failures, take responsibility for it, and explain how you improved as a result. Don't say you've never failed (Delusional much?), don't play the blame game, and don't bring up something that's a deal-breaker ("I failed a drug test once...").

6. "Why Do You Want To Work Here?"

"Are you genuinely interested in the job? Are you a good fit for the company?"

How to respond: Your goal for this response is to demonstrate why you and the company are a great match in terms of philosophy and skill. Discuss what you've learned about them, noting how you align with their mission, company culture, and reputation.

Next, highlight how you would benefit professionally from the job and how the company would benefit professionally from you.

7. "How Many Couches Are There In America"

"Can you think on your feet? Can you handle pressure? Can you think critically?"

How to respond: When faced with a seemingly absurd question like this one, it's important you're not caught off guard.

Resist the urge to tell the interviewer the question is stupid and irrelevant, and instead walk them through your problem-solving thought process. For this particular question, you would talk about how many people are in the U.S., where couches are found (homes, hotels, furniture stores), etc.

As with other parts of the job application process, it's a good idea to solicit feedback from family, friends, and former colleagues. Try out your answers to each of these questions with at least two people, then revise based on their feedback.

The importance of preparation before an interview cannot be stressed enough. The more you practice, the more confident you'll be. If you successfully answer the most common interview questions, you'll be sure to stand out to employers as a great candidate for the position.

How To Answer “Why Are You Interested In This Job?”



A common interview question employers ask during job interviews is, "Why are you interested in this position?" They want to know why you want to work at their company, and the specific motivation behind why you applied for the job (not that you need a paycheck).

Knowing how to answer interview questions well is always important, especially with this question.

To persuade the employer that you have a true connection to the company and a passion for the job you applied for, your answer to this interview question should start with, "I'm interested in this job, at this company, because…" and then list at least three reasons why you want to work there.

Here is how you should structure your answer to the interview question, "Why are you interested in this job?"

Reason #1 – Professional Fit


Your first reason should always show fit in terms of professional skills.

Example: "I'm interested in this job because I can see that, in this role, my skills could help solve this problem within your company. I also see an opportunity for me to learn and grow these skills, so we both would benefit personally, professionally, and financially. If I can come in here and solve problems and accomplish your goals, I know I can develop my career the way that I want to."

This part of your answer lets them know that you are excited about what you will be able to accomplish for them, while still emphasizing what they are getting out of the bargain. You need to sell yourself as a business-of-one who can provide a service better than the competition.

Reason #2 – Cultural Fit

Your second reason when answering, "Why are you interested in this job?" also shows fit, but in a different way.

Example: "Also, I like the culture of this organization. From what I've heard and what I've been reading about the company, it seems like a great fit for my personality and my values. I really connect with your mission statement, and feel passionate about the work that you do."

This is a general answer, so if you can be more specific by actually naming a couple of things you've heard or read about the company's workplace culture that you like, it will help your cause. This is one area where your pre-interview research is critical.

Here are a few things you may want to look for when you research the company:

  1. Is this a top company in the field/industry?
  2. Is this company known for cutting-edge products or other innovations?
  3. Does this company have a great reputation for customer service?
  4. Is this company known for being a great place to work?
  5. Does this company value and/or provide resources for employee development?

Mention those things that truly speak to you and your values so your sincerity shows.

Reason #3 – Personal Fit

Wrap up your answer to this interview question with something that personalizes it a bit more.

Examples:

  1. "And this job is in a great location for me. I've always wanted to move here."
  2. "And this job is only five minutes from my house, so eliminating the commute is a big plus."
  3. "And I've always used your products, and I just love them. I am really excited about being a part of that."

Say something that gives you another reason of your own for wanting this job. This interview answer is a fantastic place to let your enthusiasm for the job show. It's very appealing to employers, and it gives them one more reason to hire you.
