Why Outplacement Services Don’t Work

Why Outplacement Services Don’t Work

Here’s my issue with the word “outplacement.” The name itself says, “You’re out. Go get placed someplace else.” What is a more motivating word?

We see this a lot in business. We hang on to words that maybe made sense at one point in time, but we’ve evolved. I think this word needs to be retired. But the other issue I have is that the companies that are doing outplacement right now, again, are old school.

Outplacement Services Are Outdated

@j.t.odonnell Let”s retire the word OUTPLACEMENT @j.t.odonnell #outplacement #layoff #edutok #jobsearch #WomenOwnedBusiness #hr #recruitment #careeradvice ♬ original sound – J.T. O’Donnell

The companies that still do outplacement have been around for a really long time. And when a big company does a layoff and is very visible in the public, they will go and purchase outplacement services from these older companies which honestly are teaching outdated resume, LinkedIn, and cover letter techniques, and aren’t really helping laid-off employees figure out what they want to do in their careers.

And how do I know that? Well, I built a platform—a career coaching platform—and all of these people who are getting this “outplacement” are now coming to us after it’s been unsuccessful.

The Solution? Career Coaching…

Happy woman receives career coaching

Inside my career coaching community, we’re finding out how unsuccessful outplacement services really are. We’re seeing what laid-off employees were told and we see how wrong it is. They come to us, and we help them fix it.

What’s different about us? We’re disrupting the industry. For starters, anyone can join my platform for free. We believe career coaching is a sign of greatness, not a sign of weakness. Outplacement is seen as something shameful. You did something wrong, you got laid off. But with career coaching, it’s different.

Think of your employees as becoming alumni of your organization, as the alumni having a place to collectively go. That’s what we’re doing for companies. Smart companies are doing away with outplacement and coming to us and saying, “Create an alumni center for my folks and give them the support that they need so that they can figure out what they want to do next,” and we support them. That’s what we do. That is the future of support for the people that you have to let go in your organization.

If you would like to learn more about how that works, you can direct message me and I can share more with you. But even if you don’t work with us, please think twice about overpaying for these outplacement services that are really not doing your people any good. There is a better way (and a more motivating word) than outplacement services, and that’s career coaching.

4 Things You Can Do To Be Happier At Work Today

4 Things You Can Do To Be Happier At Work Today

No matter what you do, making sure your happiness and well-being are intact are major priorities. If you’re stuck in a position, work long hours, or hate your job, this can be a difficult thing to maintain.

There are things you can do to make your situation better, though.

Here are four ways you can be happier at work today:

Eat Your Veggies At Work

Woman eats lunch while working from home

Constantly feeling down in the dumps? Maybe you need to eat more colorful foods! Researchers found that eating fruits and vegetables every day can actually increase happiness and overall well-being. For optimal results, eat seven servings of fruits and veggies each day.

Set Specific Work Goals

Man thinks about his work goals

How ambitious are you? Turns out people who set high goals for themselves are happier than those with lower expectations. Make a list of things you want to accomplish—both short-term and long-term goals. It’s always good to have something to work toward!

Don’t Make Money Your First Priority

Happy young woman works from home

You know that saying “money can’t buy happiness”? Well, it’s true. According to U.S. News and World Report, seeking more money can actually make you less happy. Instead of focusing completely on finances, make sure you take the time to celebrate your own personal growth, like what you’ve learned, who you’ve connected with, and how you’ve improved yourself.

Smile More In The Office

Happy man smiles at work

You were late to work, got chewed out by the boss, and spilled coffee on your favorite white blouse. The last thing you want to do today is smile. However, studies show forcing a smile can actually make you genuinely happy. Not only that but putting on a fake smile can help decrease stress.

So, what’s not to smile about? These are just a couple of small steps you can take to feel happier at work, starting today.

If you’re feeling lost, trapped, or burned out in your career, these tips might not help you feel happier at work. That’s a much bigger problem. You’re not out of luck, though. We can help!

3 Tips For When You Fall Out Of Love With Your Career

3 Tips For When You Fall Out Of Love With Your Career

Falling out of love with your career? Don’t worry. It’s normal to lose interest in your job or career at some point, especially if you’ve been stuck in a rut for a while and can’t seem to get that excitement for work back.

So, what can you do to fall back in love with your career? Here are three tips to follow if you’re just not that into your job anymore…

1. Shake Things Up!

@j.t.odonnell 3 Tips When You Fall Out Of Love With Your Career❤️#career #careertok #careeradvice #careers #careermode #careerchange #careertiktok #careergoals #luv ♬ original sound – J.T. O’Donnell

The first tip you should try when you fall out of love with your job is sort of like relationship advice, and that is to shake things up. When you spend as much time as you do at work/on the job, it’s easy to assume that the job’s the problem when maybe just the whole routine of your life is getting a little boring. Find a new hobby, change where you work—just do whatever you can to shake up your workday, and that might be enough to get you out of the doldrums.

2. Find A Mentor

Man talks to his mentor about job burnout

My second tip is to go find a mentor, or maybe your manager, and confide in them that you’re having this rust-out feeling, that you’re feeling stuck. They’ve probably been there before and can offer some suggestions to help you get past this career rut.

3. Look For Something New

Woman falling out of love with her job

The final thing you should try when you’re falling out of love with your career is to see what it’s like on the other side. Set up some informational interviews with people who work jobs you’re really interested in. You might find out that the grass is greener, or you might figure out how to take your current skill set and tie it to that job and make the move after all.

It’s completely normal to fall out of love with your job at some point in your career. If you think you might be falling out of love with your job, you’re probably experiencing job burnout and/or feeling stuck, lost, or trapped in your current career. The good news is, I can help.

5 Things To Do If You’re Unemployed

5 Things To Do If You’re Unemployed

Know the saying, “Applying to jobs is a full-time job”? Don’t listen to it.

Applying to jobs you’re not qualified for is counterproductive to your job search. Competition is too fierce. Even qualified applicants aren’t getting callbacks. So, stop applying to so many jobs and allocate time each week to becoming more hirable. Here’s how:

1. Volunteer

Young unemployed woman volunteering at a donation drive to fill time while she looks for a job

Volunteering can increase your chances of being hired if you’re strategic about it. Unemployed teacher? Help out with after-school programs or volunteer to be a coach’s assistant. Web designer? Find a local non-profit in desperate need of a redesign and offer your services pro bono. By volunteering somewhere relevant, you’ll keep your skills fresh while enhancing your resume.

2. Keep Your Skills Current

If you lack a skill commonly required for jobs you’re seeking, spend time each day developing that skill. Take advantage of numerous free resources online, including tutorials, eBooks, and how-to videos. If you’d rather have more of a class setup, then look for free or affordable classes in your area. Alternatively, if you already possess the necessary skills but haven’t been practicing, then do so. Skill atrophy is a huge concern for hiring managers, so practice and get yourself ready for pre-employment skills tests.

3. Network, Network, Network

Man builds his professional network

There are two parts to networking: reconnecting with your old contacts and forming new ones.

Depending on where you are in your career, reconnecting might mean contacting professors, college advisers, and internship supervisors, or it might mean getting in touch with old colleagues, bosses, and business acquaintances. Find them, email them, call them. Ask them if they would like to grab a coffee. Ask how they are (networking is social, after all) and let them know the specifics of your job search (industry, location, etc.). See if they know of anything or anyone. Most importantly, follow up!

At a temporary dead-end with your current contacts? Make new ones. Go to networking events sponsored by your university, industry, city, and so on. And look beyond traditional networking events. Consider going to lectures, neighborhood council meetings, and even community bar crawls (go easy on the sauce).

Each of these provides an opportunity to meet people with similar interests, and you can have fun in the process. Again, follow up!

4. Freelance

Woman tries freelancing for work

Some job seekers are opposed to anything that’s not a full-time job. If this sounds like you, it’s time to change your mindset. Freelancing is a great way to boost your skills, resume, portfolio, professional network, income, and confidence.

5. Build An Online Presence

Young unemployed man establishing an online presence by writing a blog post while he's looking for work

Get found online. Start a blog, spruce up your social media profiles, and/or create an online portfolio to showcase your work. Find companies you’re interested in working for, subscribe to their blogs, and follow them on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Find decision-makers at those companies and follow them as well. Learn what they’re talking about, do a little research, and then engage with them online. Impress them with your interest and insights.

Worst-case scenario: You’ll learn what’s important to them and use this information to customize your application when a job opens up.

Better-case scenario: You’ll establish a rapport with someone who will recommend you for a position and/or tell you about hidden job openings.

Best-case scenario: You’ll impress someone so much over time that they’ll create a job for you or bring you in for an exploratory interview.

So, what are you doing to become more hirable? If you aren’t doing anything, then consider doing one (or more!) of these things, starting today.

The job search process can be incredibly frustrating and stressful, especially if you’re feeling lost, trapped, or burned out in your career. If you’re struggling to find a job that’s right for you, we can help.

Is Your Interview Mindset Stopping You From Success?

Is Your Interview Mindset Stopping You From Success?

Henry Ford said it best: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” So, consider this: Is your job search and interview mindset keeping you hopeful or hopeless?

The way you approach a situation has an impact on the result. Your mindset will impact your employment outcome before you ever submit that resume or enter the interview room. Ask yourself…

  • How do you walk into an interview?
  • Do you believe your chances of getting hired are a gamble and therefore don’t even consider preparing for interviews?
  • Do you believe interviewers are the enemy and perceive them as judging you the entire time?
  • Are you so tired, frustrated, or nervous with interviewing that your focus tends to be on just getting it done?

What if you were to think of the interviewers as potential, future co-workers? What if these “new” co-workers were to become your friends? How would you present yourself in an interview then? Is it possible that the interview can be a time where you get to really feel your strength and walk away with new people thinking you were pretty cool?

An interview is YOUR time to shine. The employer has gifted you a set amount of time to showcase what you have to offer. How you come across is completely up to you and will be affected by your mindset.

MINDSET: Confidence

Are you overly confident and arrogant, or are you unsure of yourself and constantly doubting…everything? A shy person doesn’t need to pretend to be the most outgoing person alive. However, if you’re so shy that the interviewers feel like they’re pulling teeth just to get answers out of you, you might as well pay them for doing all the work. For the bold and opinionated, you don’t need to make yourself weak and opinionless.

Remember, though, that the interviewers aren’t your friends and family who already love you; they’re total strangers who need to form an opinion of you so they can narrow their decision on who to hire. Don’t make it easy for the interviewer to decide you aren’t a good fit. Determine your confidence level beforehand and adjust your mindset accordingly for an interview setting. Either fake it until you become confident enough, or remind yourself that there is ALWAYS someone better than you if you need to take it down a few notches.

MINDSET: Interviewers

Woman interviews a remote job candidate

The interviewers want to like you. They need to fill a vacancy and want to be reassured there are good, strong candidates out there. There is no reason why you can’t be that person. No reason. The interviewers can be your friend or your enemy. It’s your choice. I recommend choosing to see them as your walking billboard. Make such an awesome impression on them that they can’t stop raving about you long after you leave. Yes—this does happen.

On the other hand, if your mindset is one of fearing the interviewers or of anger and frustration towards them, this will also be what they remember long after you leave. In the event you apply for another position with them in the future, the chances of you receiving an invitation to interview again will have likely decreased. It’s up to you to start off on the right foot with the right mindset.

MINDSET: The Energy Of Self-Talk

Woman feels anxious before a job interview

What are you telling yourself? Do you believe you are worth having the job you want? Do you really want the job you’re applying for, or do you just want any job? Have you become bitter and now believe all HR personnel are stupid? The energy (or sometimes lack of energy) created by not believing in yourself, by not having your heart in something, or by assuming others are the problem, can be felt on both a conscious and subconscious level.

Think of the times you’ve walked into a room and immediately knew someone was talking about you. We can all sense other people’s energy and they can sense ours. Whatever you tell yourself is likely going to be exactly what you get in return. A shy, scared mindset yields doubt in your ability to perform, and an arrogant mindset yields an immediate wall between you and the interviewers. Show yourself to the world, but remember that no one owes you anything.

If time is of the essence in earning that next paycheck, why waste time on assuming you know everything, believing you can’t achieve what you want, or on blaming others? Your mindset shapes the world you live in. Be mindful and make it the most fantastic place ever. Your future is listening.

We know how difficult it is to have the right mindset in a job interview, especially if you’ve been struggling to find a job and/or feel trapped, lost, or burned out in your career. That’s why we want to help.

A Work It Daily Testimonial…

Happy young woman writes a review about Work It Daily

J.T. and team,

I want to say a big THANK YOU for sharing your inspirational videos and other tips on LinkedIn. Thanks to you, I successfully landed a job in my desired career field (I pivoted my career to more closely match my talent with my passion), AND I negotiated a salary increase of 63% more than the hiring team’s initial offer. Plus, they upped my annual potential bonus from 10% to 12%. I have never been able to successfully negotiate my salary before now.

I have been following you for about 3-4 years. About a year ago, I finally invested in your resume and cover letter review because I decided to get a little more serious about getting my career documents and online presence up to a higher standard just in case a new opportunity came along.

Well, this past January, my current employer made some interesting decisions for remote workers that lead my career truly into a dead-end if I would have stayed. So, instead of getting sad about feeling stuck, I went into full swing by applying all of your wonderful advice that I’ve learned over the years.

I quickly found myself actively interviewing with 4 different companies. At each stage I told myself, “Ok [name], remember what J.T. says to do at this point…” and I went and did it.

I start my new job as a Technical Writer, fully remote, on April 4th.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I don’t know about you, but that testimonial brought tears to my eyes! It’s a wonderful reminder for us at Work It Daily to know that what we do is truly making a difference in people’s lives.

We hope you found this Work It Daily review to be motivating and inspiring. And remember: you’re not alone in your career. Hate Your Resume? Do This!

Hate Your Resume? Do This!

So, you hate writing resumes. I get it. It’s so difficult. You don’t know what to put on it. It feels weird writing about yourself. You don’t know if you’re doing it correctly. You’re changing it all the time. And when you finally send it out to employers, you’re not getting any responses.

I understand the struggle. We were never taught how to write an effective resume. We were never taught how to optimize a resume so it gets past the ATS and into the hands of the hiring manager.

All the stress, frustration, and confusion that comes with resume writing might make you think that you should invest in a resume writer. Here’s my expert opinion…

Avoid Resume Writers

@j.t.odonnell If you hate your resume, do this… #resume #resumetips #learnontiktok #edutok #jobsearch #careertiktok #careertips #linkedin #careeradvice #resumen ♬ original sound – J.T. O’Donnell

Let me be very clear about this: resume writers do not write resumes for the right people. They’re supposed to write them for the recruiters. Recruiters want simple, clean, easy to understand, easy to read in 6-13 seconds. Resume writers write for you. They want to give you an ego boost. So, you spend $300, which is the average cost of hiring a resume writer, and they write up this fancy resume with fancy fonts and tables and make you look so important and so unbelievable—and you still don’t get any calls.

Do you know why?

Because a lot of these templates they’re using are bogus. They don’t work. The tables alone get tossed out of applicant tracking systems (ATS). They’re designing your resume to make you feel good, not get you the attention that you want and need from employers.
