Never include soft skills on your resume. It doesn't matter whether you're changing careers or not. Soft skills cannot be quantified. Therefore, they do not belong on your resume.

For example, "detail-oriented" is a soft skill, and "project management" is a transferable skill. You may not have experience managing the types of projects in the industry you're looking to get a job in, but if you have the skill, you'll likely be able to transition into a role that requires project management smoothly.

3. Focus On Your Accomplishments

In the "Work History" section of your resume, you'll want to focus on what you accomplished in previous roles, keeping your transferable skills in mind. For each role you list, you should have at least three bullet points detailing your quantifiable accomplishments.

Employers want to see what you accomplished in your previous roles and how those accomplishments could translate to success in their industry. They don't care what your tasks or responsibilities were. That won't tell them the value you provide as a business-of-one.

If you're asking yourself, "Do I need these things on my resume?" take a look at the things job seekers should and should not include on their resumes.

An objective or mission statement used to be the right header for your resume. Today, it's obsolete.

Instead, utilize an experience summary. This is a list of your skills and requirements that are needed for a certain job. They're hard skills and transferrable skills, and they will help optimize your resume with keywords so it can get past the ATS.

Once it does that, it will be in the hands of the hiring manager, and they'll be impressed by your qualifications at first glance. It will also compel them to continue reading further about your successes and job history.

2. Leave Off The References

References should not be included on a resume. If a job posting requires you to submit a few references, create a separate document and add them in there instead. 2. Include Accomplishments & Quantify Your Results With Numbers

Recruiters want you to tell them why you're the right fit for the job, so don't be shy about emphasizing what your skills are and how they'd help the company.

Quantify your results as best you can. Use examples that include numbers. if you've saved time or money—by how much? List your accomplishments as bullet points. If something can't be quantified (like job responsibilities), it won't impress recruiters and employers. Therefore, don't waste space on your LinkedIn profile by including them.

Your resume must show how you are the solution because you've done it before. Structure your experience so that each sentence is front-loaded with results. Instead of, "Evaluated current processes and led efforts that restructured operations, leading to a reduction in costs and an increase in revenue," try "Slashed overhead costs by 20% while simultaneously increasing revenue by 45% by completely overhauling sales processes and operations for optimal efficiency."

If you think like management, you can pick out what management most cares about, and make sure you highlight that in your resume.

2. Quantify Your Accomplishments

In other words, use numbers. By adding figures to your accomplishments, you provide measurable, credible proof of your performance.

For example, "Added $4 million to the bottom line..."

Beyond showing revenue, numbers can help provide context for your results through comparisons.

  • "Ranked #1 out of 45 sales reps for top sales performance."
  • "Achieved 95% customer referral rate, a figure 2 times higher than the company average."
  • "Conducted company-wide training for 500 employees."

This is one of the things a lot of people struggle with, but it is vital. Quantifying your accomplishments solidifies them in the mind of the reader. It turns an abstract statement into a hard fact.

3. Use Active Words

Fill your resume with verbs that convey energy and action. Carefully selected verbs also help you create concrete statements that create a visual for the reader. Instead of, "Put in processes that led to a significant reduction in costs," try "Decreased costs by devising efficient sales process."

But be careful. Don't use the same verbs over and over. Do the work and find powerful synonyms.

4. Trim The Fat From Your Resume

The hiring manager or recruiter may have dozens of resumes to review, so make sure yours is easy to get through. Write succinctly, be specific, edit out filler words, and trim the unnecessary detail that doesn't add to your qualifications for the position.

These methods are particularly beneficial when you're answering behavioral interview questions that hiring managers ask to see if a candidate has enough self-awareness to know what they're good at, and what skill sets need improvement.

Use Numbers To Your Advantage

Numbers are great for demonstrating your skills and expertise. Did you increase revenue, or save time/money? Did you improve a procedure and, if so, how much time did you save? How many clients did you win in your last job? Don't just tell the employer what the result was. Tell them how you got the result and what your decision-making process was.

Prepare several examples of quantifiable results for your next job interview and you'll significantly increase your chances of getting that job offer!

Opinions Of Your Skills Don’t Belong On LinkedIn


The 10 most overused words on LinkedIn are subjective. Meaning that if you use them, you are stating an opinion of yourself. Take a look:

  1. Specialize
  2. Experienced
  3. Skilled
  4. Leadership
  5. Passionate
  6. Expert
  7. Motivated
  8. Creative
  9. Strategic
  10. Focused

The problem with using these words is that, while you think it’s okay to talk about yourself in this way, the reader of your profile (aka a recruiter or hiring manager) gets the mistaken impression that you think you are “all that and a bag of chips.”

Simple Test To Fix Your Profile

The solution is to test your profile and then take out any words that aren’t fact. Here’s how you test it: simply read each sentence on your profile and then ask yourself, “Says who?” If you can’t validate it within the sentence you are using it in, then it needs to go. I used all 10 of the words on LinkedIn’s list below to show you examples of how they get misused.

  • I am a strategic, motivated professional.
  • I am creative and experienced.
  • I have great leadership skills.
  • I am a skilled expert in my field.
  • I know how to specialize to meet the needs of my job.
  • I am a focused leader who's passionate about my industry.

For all of the above, you can’t help but think when you read them, “Geez. Don’t you think a lot of yourself!” Or, as I mentioned above, the immediate reaction becomes, “Really? Says who?”

Solution: List Accomplishments

Once you edit your profile, go back through and insert accomplishments that prove what you were trying to say about yourself. These would be examples of better fits:

  • I have a 10-year track record of exceeding my employer’s performance review standards.
  • I have created 20+ projects in X, resulting in $1M in new revenues.
  • I have completed more than 100 business analysis projects that have saved my employers $250K+ in the last 2 years.
  • I have managed teams of 2-50 through 15+ complete project lifecycles.
  • I have worked with over 400 customers to solve implementation issues that reduced client service calls by 50%.

Final Tip: Quantify To Qualify

Notice all of the above bullet points use numbers, percentages, and statistics to prove the skill. This is called quantifying your accomplishments, and it is the most compelling way to validate your experience. When it comes to LinkedIn, facts are always better than fiction!

Quantifying your accomplishments on a resume is very important since employers do not make important hiring decisions based on qualifications only. Recent college graduates often struggle with how to quantify their accomplishments. However, accomplishments aren't only about big numbers—anything that contributes to the company's goals is an achievement.

How To Quantify Your Accomplishments As A Recent College Grad


Even as an intern or recent college graduate, changing a process to improve the ease or speed of a task is an accomplishment. You should be able to find some achievements from your course or work experience. It is easy to impress the interviewer with examples of increasing profits, decreasing costs, or streamlining processes.

When asked about accomplishments, don't say clichés answers like: I got 2:1 or I got a driver's license. Having a degree is hardly going to make you stand out from the crowd. Ideally, you would want to mention something tangible that you can measure (e.g. if you raised money for charity, how much did you raise in the end?).

As with competency-based interviews that usually focus on behavioral questions, you should aim to use the STAR technique when quantifying your accomplishments.

  • Situation: Give the interviewer some context. Describe the situation and why the accomplishment was significant. Why was it difficult to achieve?
  • Task: What specifically did you aim to achieve?
  • Action: Explain what your specific actions were to achieve that goal.
  • Result: Make sure it is specific. If you've saved time or money or received great feedback, say it.

If you're still struggling to come up with something, think about whether you've done any of these:

  • Trained for and finally completed a marathon or other sporting achievement
  • Set up a new student society or turned a struggling one into something more successful
  • Overcome a fear by completing something you were frightened of
  • Given a presentation at an event and got over public speaking worries
  • Raised a certain amount of money for charity
  • Helped others to succeed, for example, by teaching them a new skill

Here are some examples of quantified accomplishments for recent college grads:

  • Worked as a part of a team of students who created a multi-media campaign that increased student enrollment by 45%
  • Named class representative of 5,000 students during final year at college, owing to consistently acquiring "A" grades and exceptional personal conduct
  • Streamlined 3 university admissions office procedures by introducing centralized online enrollment procedures
  • Received 8 awards for drama and music during the 4 years spent at college
  • Attained the Dean's Award for Excellence following distinctions in 5 languages and 3 sports

You can choose a professional accomplishment that's related to the role, such as exceeding sales targets in your part-time job, but you don't have to—it's more important that it's an achievement you're genuinely proud of.
