How To Choose A Career Path

Are you struggling to figure out what you want to do for a job? Well, I’m about to give you some advice that will help speed up this journey for you.

You need to understand a specific framework in order to get the results you want and deserve. The reason you can’t figure out what you want to do is that you don’t understand what your unique value add (UVA) is. What are the aspects of your professional strengths that you would most like to use on a daily basis? When you figure that out, you can take jobs that, by their nature, will make you feel satisfied and happy.

Now, why didn’t they teach us this in school? I don’t know, my friend. But there are a couple of things you can do to figure out your UVA, and it starts with a professional strengths assessment.

Discover Your Professional Strengths & Unlock Your UVA

There are two key areas that I have all my clients start with. At Work It DAILY, we have seven proprietary assessment tools that our members take to unlock their full UVA so they can identify and target companies. But for starters, so I don’t overwhelm you, let’s focus on two easy and free assessment tools.

The first tool is the Communication Style (ISAT) Quiz. Think of your communication style as your workplace personality. This is going to help you understand how others perceive you in the workplace. People perceive innate strengths in you based on your personality/ You need to know that about yourself. You need to know how others see you. And you need to make sure that you’re choosing jobs that play to the strengths of this workplace personality, this communication style.

The second tool is the Career Decoder Quiz. This quiz will tell you what your top workplace personas are (aka how you like to do tasks and add value at work). There are eight workplace personas, eight ways that we create value on the job, and we can do all of them, but we tend to prefer two or three. When you know what your top three workplace personas are, you can then take your personality and your personas and start to match them to careers that are going to be a fit for you, careers that are going to make you feel satisfied and successful on a daily basis.

When we put personality and personas together, we can help you identify career paths that will be the right fit for you. To make this easier, I put together a free Professional Strengths Workbook you can download that will walk you through taking these two quizzes and how to assess the results.

This is going to empower you and help you unlock your UVA. Better yet, when you talk to employers in your job search, you now understand what you need to market about yourself so that they see you as a fit because when you know more about your personality and your personas you can leverage those as strengths in job interviews to get the job.

You need to start doing a professional strengths assessment to unlock your personality and your personas, and this will get you on the right path.

Good luck, and go get ’em!

The 3 Types Of Work Everyone Should Know
  • January 25th, 2024

There are only three types of work. You either have a job, a career, or a calling. I have been a career coach for over 20 years and I can tell you that after working with thousands of people what you do for work falls into one of these three categories.

What To Know About The 3 Types Of Work

THE 3 TYPES OF WORK ##IKnowWhatYouDid ##jobsearch ##job ##career ##calling ##careerdecoder ##careeradvice ##careertiktok ##joblife ##careertok ##work ##1

♬ original sound – J.T. O’Donnell

As a professional, you either have:

  1. A job – it just pays the bills and doesn’t bring you a lot of satisfaction other than the fact that it’s taking care of you financially.
  2. A career – not only does it pay the bills, but you feel like you’re leveraging some of your strengths, so it makes you feel a little satisfied.
  3. A calling – you’re leveraging your strengths, and it feels like it’s what you were meant to do, and you’re getting paid for it.

The Problem

Professional man works from home

Now, the problem with this is that over the years, society has convinced all of us that the only thing we should be striving for is the calling—that we should be in love with our work. Everything we do should feel effortless and we should get a big paycheck for it. And that’s not how it works.

Your life is forever changing. There are times in your life when a job is the only thing you need. It’s the only thing you can handle. It pays the bills, and that’s good enough. And every job is temporary.

Then, there’s the career. There are times in your life when you feel like you’re doing satisfying work and you’re getting the paycheck.

Then, sometimes, people reach the calling; they find exactly what they want to do in life. But the thing about the calling is that you need to be willing to sacrifice—you need to be willing to do it even if you can’t get a paycheck. Most people don’t have the strength or the resources to go after the calling.

Stop Looking For A Calling And Do This Instead…

Professional women smile as they work

As a career coach, I want to manage people’s expectations and I want them to be as happy as they possibly can be in the situation they’re in. But to do that, everyone needs to understand that it’s not one-size-fits-all.

Stop searching for the perfect calling in the big paycheck. Learn to assess where you are today. Understand what’s currently going on in your life. Let’s make a conscious decision about what type of work—a job, a career, and (maybe) a calling—you need right now. And then let’s work to improve that step by step.

They didn’t teach us this in school. And, candidly, employers don’t want you to know this because they want you to be forever stuck in a job, don’t they? But there are good employers out there.

Good employers want you to feel fulfilled and satisfied. They can take you to the career level and maybe even the calling level. But they don’t just grow on trees and they don’t just fall in front of you. There’s no magic fairy godmother to give you that calling or career. You have to figure out who you are and what your strengths are, and then we start to work with that and, like a puzzle, we piece it together—a beautiful, unique puzzle that is all you.

So, stop looking for a calling and simply focus on growing your career. If you “work it daily,” you’ll get to where you want to be in your professional life. I promise.

3 Job Search Tips For New Grads

New grads with limited work experience are some of my favorite people to coach. And here’s why…

You have no bad habits yet. You have no preconceived notions. You don’t have a long list of demands that you want from a job. If anything, you’re just trying to figure out what kind of work would work for you.

Does that sound familiar?

This is why I love working with new grads. And if you’re a new grad looking for your first job out of college, these are the best job search tips I give all my clients who are in the same boat as you…

The Best Job Search Tips For Recent College Grads

@j.t.odonnell Replying to @swoopchirp New Grads Job Search Tips! 👍🍀❤️ if you are a new grad then you have a competitive advantage in that you have no bad habits. however at the same time you haven’t been taught how to position yourself with employers. you need to leverage your intrinsic motivation. that is what will get you up every day to go do the job. the best thing to do is to identify companies where you feel a deep connection to the work that they do and then you want to leverage your unique skill sets to match them to jobs there. companies love hiring people that they can mold into high performing employees. that’s one of the advantages of hiring a new grad. so you want to make the most of that by being able to Showcase how your personality and your workplace personas will be a great fit for their organization. the first place to start is to take the two free quizzes linked in my bio and then if you want help decoding the results I’ve got an awesome new tiktok series here that you can purchase where you can listen to me explain the results. but most importantly if you’d like to get some career coaching to help you with all of this I hope you’ll head over to workitdaily.com where we help new grads all the time just like you. we’ve got a great 7 Day free trial! #newgrad #collegegrad #collegegraduate #newgradjobs #howto #jobsearch #howtofindajob #findmeajob #jobsearchtips #jobsearch #jobsearching #jobsearchhelp #careeradvice #careercoach #careercoachontiktok #careerhelp #careerquiz #careerdecoder #workplacepersonas #personalityquiz #communicationstyles ♬ original sound – J.T. 1. Understand Your Unique Combination of Professional Strengths (Communication Style & Workplace Persona)

My first piece of advice for you is to understand two major components of your professional strengths. The first is your communication style (how you interact with others in the workplace). This plays a huge role in the type of jobs you’d be a good fit for. For example, if you’re a contemplator, you’re more introverted. You’re not going to want a job that requires you to be really extroverted with a lot of people. Whereas if you were an energizer, you would actually feed off the energy of others.

The second thing you need to learn about yourself is your workplace personas. This is how you create value on the job. Companies pay you to create value, right? You need to save or make them enough money to justify the cost of hiring you. This is something they never teach us in school. So, there are eight workplace personas, and you should find out what your top three workplace personas are. Are you a builder, mentor, super connector, educator, visionary, optimizer, or researcher?

Take my free quizzes below to discover your unique combination of professional strengths:

2. Use The Information In Step 1 to Create an Interview Bucket List

Once you know your communication style and top workplace personas, you can weed out a whole bunch of jobs that aren’t a fit for you and dial in on the kinds of roles that would be a fit for you. Then, we can teach you how to take that information and use it to reach out to employers and introduce yourself to them. This is a technique called an interview bucket list where you come up with a list of companies that you feel connected to. It’s called intrinsic motivation. That’s the fancy term. And when you are a recent grad, that’s all you got, my friend.

As a new grad, you don’t have a lot of experience to share. But companies love recent grads who have an intrinsic motivation to work for them and who understand their personality (their communication style and workplace personas) and how they’ll create value for them. That shows a self-aware recent grad, and that’s the kind they love to hire and mold, which will help catapult your career.

It’s a really great time for you to be looking for work if you understand your unique combination of professional strengths and how to create an interview bucket list.

If you would like us to coach you on all of the things I’ve discussed, sign up for Work It DAILY’s seven-day free trial of our career coaching platform that is literally going to teach you everything you need to know to land your first dream job.

Good luck, and go get ’em!

If you’re in a career you hate and you haven’t been able to figure out how to get out of it, you’ve come to the right place. As a career coach for over 20 years, I’ve worked with thousands of people in your position. The good news is that there are a couple of simple steps you can follow to successfully get out of a career you hate and into one you love.

You Don’t Have To Climb The Hill Anymore

@j.t.odonnell How to get out of a career you HATE. 🤢 #careertiktok #jobtiktok #careeradvice #jobtok #careertok #job #career #jobshopper #workitdaily #jobsearchtips #careerchange #changecareers ♬ original sound – J.T. O’Donnell

Imagine there are two roads in front of you.

The first road is a huge hill. You would have to go up this hill to see what’s on the other side.

The second road is a straight, flat path. It would be easy to take. It’s really long. But at the very end of it, far off in the distance, you can see a beautiful house, your dream house. You know if you just got on this path and followed it step by step at your own pace, you would eventually get to this beautiful home.

Which road are you going to take? The huge hill where you don’t know what’s on the other side? Or the straight path that might take some time to travel, but you can see exactly what you’re going to get? Obviously, the straight path.

But here’s the thing: you’ve been climbing the hill because that’s what people told you to do, right? Climb that hill, get to the top, and then you weren’t happy. So you climbed another hill, got to the top, and weren’t happy again. Why would you ever want to do that again?

You don’t have to climb the hill. The problem is that school never taught us this. They never taught us how to fix career dissatisfaction. And your employer is never going to teach it to you because that would mean you’d probably leave your job.

So where are you going to learn how to do this? Where do you figure out how to have a straight path to the destination you’re looking for?

How To Get Out Of A Career You Hate (In 2 Easy Steps)

Woman on laptop learns how to get out of a career she hates

1. Embrace Microlearning

The first step to getting out of a career you hate is embracing microlearning. Microlearning is a concept that involves taking five to 15 minutes out of your day (every day) to learn something new. These small, but consistent, chunks of time you’re dedicating to learning something new are rewiring your brain to help you understand and close your knowledge gaps so that you can get what you want out of your career.

With microlearning, you start at a really slow walk. But over time, you start to get addicted to it. It’s exciting, and it becomes a habit. You start to feel empowered and you go from a slow walk to a full-on run, and that’s how you get to your destination faster.

2. Tap Into Your Professional Strengths

The second step to getting out of a career you hate is tapping into your unique combination of professional strengths. You need to know how you like to create value on the job. When you understand how you like to create value, you can build a personal brand that you can then use to market to the right employers to land your dream opportunities.

This is how you go from being a random job seeker (climbing a hill) to being a focused job shopper who’s getting exactly what he or she wants (straight path). That’s the difference.

Want to learn your professional strengths and gain access to a platform built for microlearning?

I’m going to let you in on a little secret about successful career changes. So many people spend years not being able to pivot their career into a new industry or a new skill set because they haven’t done the most vital part of the process.

The most important part of the career change process is the professional strengths assessment. That’s the secret to successfully changing careers. Without going through the professional strengths assessment, you won’t know which career direction is right for you.

Discovering Your Professional Strengths Helps You Understand Your Intrinsic Motivation

School never taught you this. They never taught you how to properly assess your professional strengths. And, just so you know, employers will never teach you this either. And that’s because when you understand your intrinsic motivation (how you like to create value and what makes you feel insanely productive on the job), when you tap into that and understand your unique combination of professional strengths, you will be able to identify careers that are a fit for you. You will know what to say during interviews. You’ll be able to market yourself. And, better yet, you will be much happier on the job, which leads to career growth and success.

Ask anyone who’s dialed into their career. They’ll tell you they have a very clear sense of their intrinsic motivation and the value they create through their professional strengths.

Now, how do you inventory this? How do you discover your professional strengths and understand your intrinsic motivation?

If you’re serious about changing careers, take the free quizzes above and sign up for my Professional Strengths Bootcamp.
