What do you need to get a job? Most job seekers think a good resume and cover letter are enough to land job interviews and stand out to employers in the hiring process. In today's competitive job market, you need a lot more to get a job.

Here are the seven things you need to get a job in 2024. Let's see if you have all of them.

What Do You Need To Get A Job?


1. A Job Search Strategy

You do not want to waste your time applying for jobs that are going to ghost you. You need to know what types of opportunities and companies will actually hire you. From this moment forward, make sure you have a proactive job search strategy.

2. A Skimmable Resume

We call it the six-second resume. That's because recruiters and hiring managers skim your resume first to make sure you have the five or six main skill sets they put on that job description. Otherwise, you won't be considered.

3. A LinkedIn Profile That Is Searchable

Keywords are very important on LinkedIn. Recruiters and hiring managers use a tool that helps them find people who are a match for the jobs they are hiring for. If you don't optimize your LinkedIn profile with keywords, you will not be found.

4. LinkedIn Posts

You need to post on LinkedIn, especially if you are looking for professional jobs. LinkedIn changed its algorithm recently and people who actually post on a regular basis rank higher in search results, and that's how you're going to get seen more.

5. Answers to Behavioral Interview Questions

You need to be ready for behavioral questions in job interviews. Everyone is doing evidence-based hiring now, which means they're going to ask you questions like, "Tell me about a time when you did X or Y." If you don't understand what behavioral interview questions are and how to answer them correctly, you will end up giving too little information or too much information, and that'll get you ruled out.

6. A Follow-Up Process

You need to know how to follow up after each interview, whether it's a phone, video, or in-person interview. Following up correctly will help you stay in the running.

7. Salary Negotiation Skills

When you get to the final interview, you need to know how to negotiate salary like a boss. Do you know how to approach the employer to get more money? If you don't, you could miss out or leave money on the table.

How To Get Hired With A Criminal Record

It's difficult enough to get hired nowadays without having a criminal record. So, is it even possible to land a good job after committing a crime?

The short answer is yes.

But it's not going to be easy, unless you follow these three steps during your next job interview.

1. Come Up With Your Explanation

Employers will conduct background checks on you. The old rule of thumb was that a felony comes off your record after seven years, and it does. But the internet has a much longer memory than that. Your criminal record will probably always be up there for employers to find. If you have any record with the police, HR can (and will) find it. So, it's important that you tell employers about your criminal record before they find it out for themselves and then hold it against you in the hiring process.

A key thing to remember as you look for a job with a criminal record is that it's not about overcoming your criminal background; it's about working through it.

Before you mention your criminal record to a hiring manager, come up with your explanation. Use the "Experience + Learn = Grow" model, which is the same strategy you should use when answering behavioral interview questions. Tell the employer the facts. Take all of the emotion out of it. Don't make excuses. Simply tell them what the situation was and what happened.

Then, tell the employer what you learned. What did this powerful experience teach you? (Don't focus on the negative.) How did you grow from this experience?

2. Take Responsibility For Your Actions

Let's be honest. We don't like to admit that we did something wrong, that we failed or made a mistake. When we own our mistakes and failures, we have to admit that we're not perfect. And no matter how many years we've been on this earth, that's still something a lot of us struggle with.

If you own something, you can change the outcome. And that's what you need to do when looking for a job with a criminal record. Take responsibility for your past actions and mistakes. If you don't own it, then you're helpless.

Whatever you do, don't have a victim mentality. Don't think someone or something has control over you. By owning it, you can make things better.

The hard truth is that trying to defend yourself, trying to push some of the blame on something else, really hurts your credibility. If you don't say, "I own it. There were other factors involved, but I own it," during your job interview, no one is going to trust you.

We understand that it's really hard to own the mistakes you've made if you haven't yet come to grips with them. Just know that you will have to in order to get a job, and that it will be so incredibly freeing.

3. Show The Employer How You've Changed

After you've explained the "grow" part of the "Experience + Learn = Grow" strategy, you'll want to have examples of how you've grown as a person and as a professional.

It is very hard to gain people's trust when you're looking for a job with a criminal record. It's very hard to get a job at all. Tell the employer this, and then show them what you've done to earn people's trust again.

Try framing the conversation like this:

"This is what I've done to try to build my reputation, gain trust, and develop my skills since then. Here's where I am, and here's what I'm doing going forward. Here's what I'm doing to put this behind me so it's not an issue anymore."

Employers need to hear this. They need to know you've gone through that thought process and have grown and changed as a person since committing the crime. If they can walk away from the job interview knowing that you own your mistakes, learned from them, and have bettered yourself since committing the crime, they won't hold your criminal record against you as much as they would have if they had found it before you brought it up.

Interview Tips: Why You Shouldn’t Say You Were “Terminated” From A Job



If your position gets terminated, should you mention that in your next interview? Many job seekers face this dilemma in their job search when they're newly unemployed. First, you need to determine what type of termination occurred.

There are two types of termination: voluntary and involuntary. If you quit, that's called voluntary termination. If it's involuntary termination, there are two types of that: you got fired or you got laid off. And those are also very different. Fired means you did something wrong and they couldn't keep you. Laid off means you did nothing wrong. They were in financial trouble and they couldn't keep you. So as you go down that decision tree, you'll have to clarify what type of termination happened—what "terminated" means in your case.

Don't Say You Were "Terminated." Say This Instead...


My personal advice as a 20-year career coaching veteran is if you quit a job, make sure you tell the employer that information and explain why you quit. If you got fired from a job, you want to try to explain that as objectively as you can without making any excuses—owning your mistakes. And if you got laid off, tell them you got laid off. It was beyond your control.

I wouldn't use the word "terminated" at all. Instead, I'd get very clear on what happened and I would use the "Experience + Learn = Grow" model to answer the "Why did you leave your job?" question in a way that's very factual and succinct, that has a beginning, a middle, and an end, and is structured.

That kind of structured response is the most important thing to do in this situation because it shows that you've really thought about what happened and want to make sure they properly understand.

This is how you score points in a job interview. I see people every single day who have been fired or laid off from jobs using the "Experience + Learn = Grow" model to answer difficult interview questions. And then the recruiter and hiring manager say, "Great answer," and move on because these things happen. They're out of our control sometimes, or they're in our control and we learn from them.

You need a better response. So don't use the word "terminated." Get really clear and remember the "Experience + Learn = Grow" model. You can do this.

1. Wear/bring something that will be a cue to relax.

The first tip that will help you stay calm and confident in job interviews is to go into the interview with something that, when you notice it, will be a cue for you to take a breath and relax and put a smile on your face. For example, if you wear jewelry, put the ring on a different finger or the watch/bracelet on the other wrist. If you usually carry a pen, bring a different color pen.

When you notice this one thing, don't over-smile, but take a breath and remind yourself that you're not there in an interrogation. You're there potentially meeting a new colleague. And when you look at it that way, that you're there to make a friend and get to know somebody, you will take that breath, you will smile, and you will relax. And the more you notice it, the more you'll connect with who you are in that moment so that you're giving off the right body language and facial expressions because that's a big part of your communication in a job interview.

2. When you get asked a difficult question, begin your response with, "That's a great question," and remember to smile.

Whenever you get asked one of those difficult questions in a job interview, those questions that just make us anxious, condition yourself to say, "That's a great question," because, psychologically, in my experience, when you say that's a good question and you say it with a smile on your face, you approach it like, "I'm going to answer this question the best that I can."

Also, the hiring manager knows they're asking you a hard question. That's why they're asking you. They want to see your reaction. So when your reaction is, "That's a great question," that tells them you're not afraid of that question. You're ready to answer that question—a sign of confidence.

3. Learn how to answer behavioral interview questions.

The last and most important tip that will help you stay calm and confident in a job interview is to learn how to effectively answer behavioral interview questions. This is an essential part of interview prep.

Behavioral interview questions are open-ended questions designed to get inside your head and help the hiring manager learn how you think. And by having to give more than a one-word answer, it reveals more about your personality in the workplace, your aptitude, whether or not you're flexible, and your whole mentality and strategy. And this is really important because they're trying to find the right person for the job. By learning how to effectively answer behavioral interview questions, you'll be sure to show the hiring manager you are the right person for the job.

Should you look at your notes during a job interview? A lot of people have different opinions on this. Personally, as a career coach for 20+ years, I don't recommend looking at your notes during a job interview. And this is the simple reason why...

Looking at your notes during a job interview is extremely distracting. For example, if I were giving you advice in person or via video call, but I was either taking notes or looking at my notes while talking to you, how would you feel about our connection? Probably not very good.

I don't think looking at your notes sends the right message when you're trying to have a conversation during a job interview.

Now, you may think that your only other option is to memorize your interview answers. That's not true. In fact, you shouldn't be memorizing at all.

Instead of looking at notes or memorizing your answers, research the most common behavioral interview questions you'll likely be asked in the interview. Write out your answers to them. Read them back to yourself, and do that every day for a little while until you haven't memorized them, but the storyline of them has been committed to memory so that when you're asked a question, your answer comes out naturally.

Now, in addition to that, there's something that I teach at Work It DAILY called the "Experience + Learn = Grow" model. When you write the answers to these behavioral interview questions out, you want to follow a beginning, a middle, and an end. (Storytelling!)

  • What did you experience?
  • What did you learn from that experience?
  • How have you grown from that experience and how are you going to use that on the job?

This is what employers are looking for. You're a service provider. You're a business-of-one. They're trying to understand how you are going to serve their needs, why they should pick you, and why you're going to give them the best return on investment (ROI). This process—researching common behavioral interview questions, using the "Experience + Learn = Grow" model when writing out your answers in advance, and reading them until you know the stories you want to tell—will get you to a place of comfort where you'll be able to just look at them and have a conversation.

The hiring manager is a person that you're trying to connect with. This is a potential future co-worker. You are at that interview to make a friend, make a colleague, in a sense. So, you want to connect. And looking at your notes while you're trying to answer their questions—this is not connecting.

If you have such bad interview nerves that you feel like you need notes, my advice to you is to learn how to do better interview prep. You not only want to do the prep to ease your interview nerves but to be able to sit there and connect with the person you're talking to.

In the hiring process, it's all about connection! That's why looking at your notes during a job interview will do more harm than good.

Why You Shouldn’t Look At Your Notes …



One of the hardest and most important job interview questions is, "Tell me about a time you went above and beyond." Here's the perfect technique to ace the answer every time.

Step 1: Think About A Time You Exceeded Expectations


The first step is for you to sit down and think about a time when you exceeded expectations on the job.

Imagine the times when you were given a lot of praise or maybe you got a promotion or even a raise. Think about what made you earn these things and ask yourself how exactly did you go above and beyond in order to get that appreciation and that recognition.

This is going to help you flesh out the stories that you're going to want to tell in order to validate your experience and your ability to go above and beyond.

Step 2: Break The Story Down

Now, step two is for you to break that story down into what we call the "Experience + Learn = Grow" model for answering behavioral interview questions like, "Tell me about a time you went above and beyond."

You want to think about the experience objectively and factually. Explain to the hiring manager everything that happened leading up to you earning that praise or that promotion or that raise.

Then, you want to talk about what you learned. As a good employee, you always want to be thinking about those experiences and what they taught you.

Lastly and most importantly, you're going to talk about how you grew as a professional—how you're going to take what you've learned and apply it going forward. This is going to demonstrate how employers like them could benefit from this added expertise that you've developed.

Step 3: Practice Your Delivery

The third and final step is for you to practice your delivery. You do not want to walk in and wing it. It's super important that, in addition to writing out your answers, you play them back to yourself.

What do I mean by that? Well, I suggest grabbing a mirror and talking out the answers, looking at yourself straight in the eye with a smile, or asking friends or family members to do a mock interview with you. Even recording yourself and playing it back on a video will do the trick.

Doing these things repeatedly is vitally important in job interview preparation, especially when it comes to answering a question like this. "Tell me about a time you went above and beyond," can seem like a daunting interview question, but all you have to do is follow the three steps above to answer it effectively.

Scoring a job interview can be hard work, so you don't want to waste the opportunity. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, sometimes the interview can go off track and before you know it, things didn't go as well as you had hoped.

It doesn't have to be this way! Sometimes there are subtle signs during the job interview that things aren't going well that you can pick up in time to potentially turn things around.

Here are some of the signs you should look for...

The Interviewer Doesn't Try To Sell You On The Company

Have you ever heard the expression, "An interview is about you trying to get to know the company just as much as they're trying to get to know you"? It's true. You should be evaluating the company as they're evaluating your experience and skills.

But, if you're doing this and the interviewer isn't working hard to sell you on the company's good traits, it's probably not a good sign.

Companies want their chosen candidate to accept the job offer, so for their top picks, they'll typically try to mention job perks, company culture, opportunities for growth, and other positives.

You're Only Asked Easy Questions


This may seem counterintuitive. After all, if the company likes you, why would they ask you challenging questions? But interviewers ask tough questions to candidates they're considering because they want to see how they think on their feet and will react to tough job situations.

If they aren't actually considering you, they'll stick with the easiest questions to answer.

The Interview Never Gets Personal

When interviewers are interested in a candidate, they will attempt to get to know them on a deeper level than questions like "What are your strengths?" can accomplish. They will often engage in chit-chat to make sure you'd be a good culture fit and to make sure your personality will mesh well with other team members.

If questions stay surface-level, there aren't follow-up questions based on your answers, and the interviewer is cut and dried instead of diving into more personal questions, you're probably not a top candidate.

There's No Mention Of Next Steps

Typically, at some point in the second half of the interview, the hiring manager will bring up salary expectations, references, or follow-up interviews. Even if they don't do this, they'll at least tell you at what point you should hear back about moving forward with your candidacy, or the estimated time by which they're trying to fill the position.

But if an interview ends without a discussion about what the next steps in the process are, it probably means there won't be any.

3 Ways To Turn Your Interview Around

So, what can you do if you start seeing some of these signs throughout the interview? There's a chance that you may not be able to turn it around if the interviewer has already made up their mind—but there are a few tactics you can employ to give yourself the best shot.

Stay positive - Remember that there's a good chance the interviewer is having a busy day, has a million other things on their mind, or just doesn't have a very friendly or engaging personality. By projecting confidence and positivity, you have a chance to turn around their first impression.

Ask great questions - This approach has two potential benefits. One is that you can ask the interviewer outright if they think you'd be a good fit for the role—that way, if they bring up a specific concern they have with you or your experience, you have the chance to address it. Second, many recruiters and interviewers find that the type of questions a candidate asks says a lot about them. By asking insightful, thought-provoking questions, you may be able to increase the interviewer's positive perception of you.

Think of it as practice - Even if you feel pretty confident that you won't get the job based on these signs, you can at least view the interview as good practice for a job that's a better fit for you. Try your best, and make a mental note of what you can improve next time.

Interviews are difficult, and no one likes knowing that their conversation isn't going as well as they'd like. But by employing these tactics, you can have a better sense of what your interviewer is thinking and attempt to course-correct to get the job.

4 Signs Your Interview Isn’t Going Well …

“What Are Your Three Things?” — Interview Technique For Hiring Managers



Many years ago, I was working at a recruiting fair with a colleague. We spoke to a student every 30 minutes for nine hours. To say the least, it was exhausting.

During the event, my colleague and I prepared questions to ask each candidate as a litmus test for determining who would receive a second interview. Like many suggestions on LinkedIn, we focused on behavioral questions versus technical ones.

My colleague kept asking the same question at the end of each interview…

“What are the three things I need to remember about you after you leave this interview?”

Lesson For Me: How To Remember Everyone I Have Interviewed?

I was reasonably young when I learned this technique. We would sit in a conference room a week or so after the event, and we would narrow our suggestion to two or three candidates. Because time had passed, my recollection of the conversations grew “fuzzy.” My colleague was quite clear, and I needed to know why.

“How do you remember so many details from this many different conversations?”

His response? The three things.

The more unique these three responses are, the more my colleague remembered the conversation. He could recall nuances, which I forgot. He remembered details like their mannerisms, clothing, and responses to our questions. He had nearly perfect recall.

As he explained, he used the three questions as a pneumonic device to recall information—or a trigger. He would re-read the three things and instantly return to the conversation. He said with practice, I could do the same.

When I ask the question, I add one caveat. “Tell me three things I want to remember about you after this interview, and make the third one truly unique to you.” Then I sit quietly and wait.

Some interviewees are quick on their feet and riffle through the answers. Others tend to overthink about what I want to hear, and I encourage them to simply give me an answer from the gut. Interviewees who give me canned answers or anticipate what I want to hear may not get the job. The candidates who give me something special always get my attention.

Most candidates want to tell me they are: hardworking, customer oriented, organized, willing to learn, able to lead, like trying new things, get along well with others, and many of the “typical” coached responses to a question. Some people only give me these answers without the unique one. That is OK; however, I cannot guarantee their interview is memorable.

The ones who really dig deep and share something personal… These people I remember and still have friendships with to this very day.

What Kind Of Answers Do I Get?

Here are a few candidates who have given me memorable responses (if my network knows who these people are, don’t spoil it for others):

  • Hired around 2003 — I was in a terrible car accident my junior year of high school and spent six months in a hospital bed because of the plate in my forehead.
  • Hired around 2007 — I have jumped from 1500 perfectly good airplanes (parachuting enthusiast).
  • Hired 2015 — My grandmother is Native American, and my middle name is “Sky” because of my heritage.
  • Hired 2016 — I raise “sugar babies” and have dozens of them in my home. (Look them up if you don’t know—I had to.)
  • Interviewed in 2011 — I love really bad European EDM music, and I make my own music on weekends.
  • Hired 2016 — I am working with my girlfriend on my own fingernail polish company. We sell on Amazon already and are looking for long-term distribution.
  • Interviewed 2021 — My family owns and plays 1400+ board games.
  • Hired 2022 — I grew up in a town with less than 300 people, and we literally have one stop light.
  • Hired 2020 and 2022 — My friends call me “Captain Redbeard!”
  • And mine — I listen to speed & thrash metal music every day (and when I share this with a candidate, I often get the “you!?” and a confused look in response).

As I write these responses, I can recall elements of our conversations; I can remember names, and I see the faces. Several of these people are still in my life and will be for many years to come. Others I will simply remember the time spent together in the conversation. Regardless, I will remember the truly unique people in my life.

So What?

I am not going to tell you this question will work for everyone. Similar to the Dale Carnegie approach to learning someone’s name, I am simply recommending a device, a tool, a trick to remembering candidates. I also recommend you make the question your own and tweak it as I did.

Do I think this question helps me? Yes.

Do I ask this question to every single candidate? No.

The interviewees who I want to work with or hire always get the question. I am curious to watch how they approach the question, and more importantly, I want to learn something fascinating about the person across the table from me.

The most rewarding part, I have known some very cool and intriguing people in my life, and years later, I can clearly remember the most remarkable ones who share a little piece of themselves with someone they really do not know. That is the reward!

While it serves as a sign from the employer that you are being strongly considered for a position, it also can be a source of angst for candidates who fear they'll make mistakes that will cut them out of the running.

A common question interviewers ask is, "Do you know anything about our company?" Most times, candidates give vague answers, or—in a worst-case scenario—answer, "No."

If you're able to share the company's background information and showcase knowledge of its future goals for the position in question, you'll have an opportunity to impress the interviewer.

Review Common Interview Questions And Practice Them

By understanding how to answer common interview questions, particularly behavioral interview questions, you'll build a lot of confidence going into the job interview.

Another great way to build confidence for a job interview is to practice before the big day. You can do this by answering questions in front of a mirror to read your own facial expressions and body language, or you could have a friend help you with a mock interview.

It's also great to find a professional outfit you feel comfortable wearing. Feeling good in your clothes and knowing you've fully prepared can work wonders for boosting your confidence before a job interview.

Make Sure You Have No Skeletons

An important step in preparing for your interview is being able to recall your own career history and discuss prospective goals with the company and in your professional life as a whole. But, as you look back over your career, be sure to research yourself online to ensure there are no skeletons on the internet that could be brought up in your interview.

Remember, companies conduct background checks often via search engines, so it's up to you to ensure your social media profiles are professional and/or private.

A lot of job seekers will give generic examples or just talk about what they've done—but without mentioning specific accomplishments. Discussing Accomplishments Isn't Bragging


One of the reasons candidates shy away from talking about their accomplishments is because they don't want to sound arrogant. However, the job interview isn't the time to be too humble. Talking about your accomplishments and using facts and numbers isn't bragging—it's telling a story.

You have to remember that a potential employer wants you to do well in an interview. They are literally looking for an excuse to give out the job! So, tell them what they need in a clear, factual manner.

Demonstrate How You Overcome Challenges

A great way to answer questions while highlighting your skills and accomplishments is by using the "Experience + Learn = Grow" model and/or the STAR technique (situation, task, action, result).

What was the situation/problem? How did you solve this problem/overcome this setback? What did you learn from this experience? How did you apply what you learned to your career?

These methods are particularly beneficial when you're answering behavioral interview questions that hiring managers ask to see if a candidate has enough self-awareness to know what they're good at, and what skill sets need improvement.

Use Numbers To Your Advantage

Numbers are great for demonstrating your skills and expertise. Did you increase revenue, or save time/money? Did you improve a procedure and, if so, how much time did you save? How many clients did you win in your last job? Don't just tell the employer what the result was. Tell them how you got the result and what your decision-making process was.

Prepare several examples of quantifiable results for your next job interview and you'll significantly increase your chances of getting that job offer!
