Fellow Linkedin Trainers - I've got a question. I used to teach my job seekers to find people of interest on Linkedin for informational interviews (such as fellow alumni) then see which folks you happen to share a group with. I then advised them to go into that group, then you could message them (even with a free account). And you didn't have to ask them to connect with you first. Here's a video I made explaining this process: https://lnkd.in/eVpU3p_a However, it looks like this has all changed, and it is now very random. Below is a screen shot from one of my groups. It shows I can message some people, but for others I would have to send a connection request. Is this the case for you as well? Anyone know if this is permanent? Have any suggested work-arounds? Thanks for any insights you might have! And in particular I wonder if Kevin D. Turner, who is amazing at keeping up with changes, knows anything? #Linkedin #Linkedinchanges #networking #Linkedingroups

I just heard about this change this week. It seems groups no longer are a secret work around.

Why not connect? Connection requests can have the “interested in having an info interview” message. If the question is of general interest, it can just be had in the group, perhaps. Or they can look at the persons posts and add comments there?? Just a few thoughts. I wish people would connect more, instead of just following.

It’s so unfortunate. I *have* a premium membership but now I am limited to 15 messages. That number used to be larger.

Quoting Kevin D. Turner below to give him and others credit for the info on the new limitations in Groups: "▲ [Group limitations] updated to restrict Basic accounts, AKA Freemiums, from sending more than 10 Direct Messages in a Month to other Group Members who they are not connected to already. We don't know if this change is made to reduce SPAM within groups, created to put more pressure on Freemiums to upgrade their accounts buy removing opportunities or both. If it is the second reason, its not the way I wished [In] build the value in Premium. I've heard this is the new way forward for groups. In effect forcing people to take out premium if they want to be able to message people or connect using a personalised message.

Sabrina Woods to understand this issue its important to know that [in] is based on the Principle of 6º of Separation, within 6 handshakes you can meet anyone in the world, and to monetize that [in] cut us off at the 3rdº, so they can sell us to the other 3 or the other 3 to us. Historically Groups have circumvented the 6º of Separation monetization scheme, allowing us to contact and connect with anyone within the Group, and that is more than likely why [in] has worked to limit Groups' effectiveness over the years. This restriction on Basic (Freemium) with 5 and entry/bestowed Premium accounts with 15 connects, with Members beyond your network (1st, 2nd & 3rdº), in hopes to get us to upgrade to Business Premium or Sales Navigator without restrictions, started to show up last month. It's seems somewhat random because it is on the 5 wave role out (5🌊⤨ ⏳↑) and technically only applies to contacting 4th, 5th & 6th degree Members.
